With the Hawks out west, thought I’d post something to chew on.
Covering the NBA the last few years, I’ve always thought it was interesting how much stuff goes on behind the scenes that never really gets out there to the public. For instance, your (our) Atlanta Hawks…
I heard today that Coach Woodson nearly got canned before the Toronto game the other night. The Hawks owners are apparently ready to pull the trigger on him, but Billy Knight (a.k.a. Cassius Clay) is trying to convince them to give Woodson a little more time. Meanwhile, the players don’t care about each other or about Woodson (heard Salim and Marv are particularly anti-Woodson). Basically, the Hawks are a mess behind closed doors.
What will happen next? I’m guessing Woodson goes, soon, maybe before January. The owners could fire him now and make the fans think they’re pissed about how the team is playing, but the truth is, they’d have to pay Woodson anyway and they’d keep losing with a new guy, so they might as well keep him around until after the season.
Crazy thought I had: If they fire him and want to bring in a coach with Atlanta connections, that the city would probably root for and care about, that’s currently unemployed…how about Bobby Cremins, the uni-baller?

Creminy, Lang, that’s a fine idea. However, Cremins was a terrible bench coach; his last few years at Tech were awful. His one strength- recruiting, doesn’t really make him much of an asset for the NBA game.
I would like to see a change- Woodson doesn’t seem to motivate his players and doesn’t show me much on the bench to prove to me he can coach.
I don’t really have great ideas of who i’d like to see at the helm, but I would like to see someone that exerts more passion and gets visibly pissed off when players don’t execute what he wants to execute. At least you know that type of coach cares and is passionate. I can’t say that I see anything in Woody.
Agreed re: Cremins and his coaching inabilities. He’d probably use a six-man rotation.
Here’s another idea: Hubie Brown. He’s set up a ten-man rotation, teach the rookies, have some discipline…just a thought.
Paul Silas? He’s unemployed and has won in the League. I’m friends with his son, too, so that would be good for all of us.
Yeah, I like what Hubie did in Memphis, but didn’t he walk away from the situation because he was too old?
I think they said “health concerns,” but really, he left because he and Jerry West weren’t getting along. There was some assistant trainer that Hubie though West had spying on him and reporting back, and Hubie tried to fire the guy and Jerry wouldn’t have it. So Hubie walked.
But he is really old, and I don’t know if he could coach for more than two years.
We really only need a couple of years from him anyway; just enought to set this ship straight. Get the young guys on track and set up some sort of leadership that is obviously missing right now.
